The Meaning of OM (AUM)

The sound of OM is called Pranava, meaning that it is something, which pervades life or runs through life force prana or breath. If you close your eyes and silently witness your breath, you can hear the sound of OM resonating in your incoming and outgoing breath. OM is composed of three sounds, A, U and M. Before the beginning of this world, Brahman (creator of the Universe, in Hinduism) was one and non-dual. His intention of becoming many caused a vibration, thereby setting in motion creation of the Universe. This vibration was the sound of OM. If we chant the word OM, the vibration thereby generated corresponds to the same vibration that caused the creation of this Universe. This means this sound can be used as a vehicle to connect to the absolute reality.
